Out of the Box is committed, in all activities, to the following broad guiding principles:
- Acknowledging and supporting children's rights and agency - Enacting public responsibility for children and childhood - Privileging children and their carers within public spaces - Positioning children as makers, shapers and contributors to culture - Supporting the important role of the arts in the lives of children.
BACKGROUND
QPAC's Out of the Box was established in 1992 as a biennial festival. It is one of the few festivals in the world that focuses on 3 to 8 year olds and has received acclaim both within Australia and overseas for its early childhood arts programming.
Over 450,000 children and their families/carers have attended and participated in the eight festivals to date. All of the Festivals have presented a program consisting of:
- Theatre performances - Participatory workshops and hands-on activities - Exhibitions, art installations and displays
Building from the success of the festival, we've developed an on-going program for children and those who work with and care for them, drawing on the expertise of artists, arts educators and companies from around Australia and internationally.
We also plan special activities, such as research initiatives, that build collective knowledge about children, their creativity and development.
